basin

Where rivers drain

A basin is a wide, shallow container for holding liquids—a washbasin or mixing basin.

The word extends to natural formations shaped like bowls: a river basin is the area drained by a river and its tributaries; a geological basin is a depression where sediment collects.

The Great Basin covers most of Nevada.

A tidal basin is an enclosed body of water connected to the sea.
