fumarole

Steam-emitting crater opening

A fumarole is a vent in the earth's surface that emits steam and volcanic gases—sulfur dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide.

Found in volcanic regions and geothermal areas, fumaroles indicate underground heat and magmatic activity: The hikers kept their distance from the fumaroles, warned by the sulfurous smell.

The term comes from the Latin for smoke.
