Krakatoa

Sunda Strait eruption

Krakatoa is a volcanic island in Indonesia, between Java and Sumatra.

Its 1863 eruption was among the most catastrophic in recorded history—the explosion was heard thousands of miles away, and the resulting tsunamis killed tens of thousands.

The name evokes spectacular destruction: The argument erupted like Krakatoa.
