lagoon

Atoll's central pool

A lagoon is a shallow body of water separated from a larger sea or lake by a barrier—typically a sandbar, reef, or strip of land.

Coral atolls enclose lagoons, and barrier islands create them along coastlines.

The word also applies to shallow artificial ponds, especially those used for sewage treatment: The wastewater lagoon needed expansion.
