tuff

Compacted ash stone

Tuff is a type of rock formed from volcanic ash that has been compacted and ceite'd together.

It ranges from soft and porous to quite hard, depending on how much the ash particles have fused.

Tuff has been used as building stone since ancient times—the Romans quarried it extensively.

Not to be confused with tough, which sounds identical.
