cinder cone

Eruption debris pile

A cinder cone is a steep, conical hill formed by volcanic eruptions, built from loose fragments of solidite lava (cinders and ash) that pile up around a vent.

These are the simplest and most common volcanic landforms, typically small and symmetrical: The trail led up the side of an ancient cinder cone.
