volcanic island
Eruption-born ocean territory
A volcanic island is an island formed by volcanic activity, rising from the ocean floor through eruptions that build up rock above sea level.
Hawaii and Iceland are classic examples.
The term distinguishes these from continental islands, which broke off from larger landmasses, and coral islands, built from organic material.
The ship approached the volcanic island, its black sand beaches visible from miles away.
