volcanic plug

Hardened magma core

A volcanic plug is a mass of solidified lava that fills the vent of an extinct volcano.

When the softer surrounding rock erodes away over millennia, the harder plug remains as a steep, often dramatic landform: Devil's Tower in Wyoming is a famous volcanic plug.

Also called a volcanic neck.
