lava

Erupted molten rock

Lava is molten rock that flows from a volcano during an eruption.

Once it cools and solidifies, it becomes volcanic rock but may still be called lava: The hikers crossed an ancient lava field.

Lava extends to similar flowing substances: a lava lamp, lava cake with its oozing chocolate center.
