canal

Man-made waterway

A canal is an artificial waterway constructed for navigation, irrigation, or drainage.

Unlike rivers, canals are human-made channels that connect bodies of water or carry water where nature didn't provide it: The Panama Canal links the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

The word also applies to tubular passages in the body, such as the ear canal or alimentary canal.

To canalize something is to channel it, literally or figuratively, into a particular direction or course.
