seiche

Enclosed water rocking

A seiche is a standing wave that oscillates in an enclosed or partially enclosed body of water—a lake, bay, or harbor.

Unlike ocean waves driven by wind, seiches result from atmospheric pressure changes, seismic activity, or strong winds pushing water to one end, which then sloshes back and forth like water in a bathtub: The seiche caused water levels to fluctuate several feet over the course of an hour.
