gills

Fish breathing organs

Gills are the respiratory organs that allow fish and other aquatic animals to extract oxygen from water—rows of feathery or plate-like structures on either side of the head.

By extension, the thin radiating blades on the underside of a mushroom cap are also gills.

In informal speech, green around the gills describes someone looking nauseated or unwell.
