fire

Let someone go

Although fire has been demoted from its ancient status as an element, it still denotes many things that share some quality with the destructive chemical reaction involving flame and heat.

Fire designates attack by weapons (troops under fire), and an extremely strong emotion (the fire of love).

As a verb, fire usually signifies bad news for whoever is on the receiving end: to fire a person is to end their employment.

To fire a weapon is to discharge it.
