weir

Low water barrier

A weir is a low dam built across a river or stream to raise the water level or regulate its flow.

Unlike a full dam, water flows over the top of a weir continuously.

Weirs are used for measuring water flow, diverting water for irrigation, or creating mill ponds: The old weir still marks where the mill once stood.
