underwater
Beneath the waves
Underwater describes something beneath the surface of water: underwater photography, an underwater cave.
The word also applies to activities conducted there: underwater welding.
In finance, underwater means owing more than an asset is worth: Their mortgage is underwater—the homeowner is submerged in debt, unable to surface without a loss.
