levee

Riverside earthen wall

A levee is an embankment built along a river to prevent flooding.

Levees may be natural formations from sediment deposits or engineered structures of earth, concrete, or other materials: The levees failed during the hurricane.

In American English, levee also means a landing place or pier along a river.

Separately, a levee is a formal reception, originally one held by a monarch upon rising—from the French word for getting up.
