scribe
Tool for marking
A scribe is someone who writes things down professionally—originally by hand, before printing existed.
Scribes copied manuscripts, recorded transactions, and served as literate intermediaries in societies where most people couldn't read or write.
The word now appears in historical contexts or humorously for any writer: The office scribe took notes at every meeting.
As a verb, to scribe is to mark or score a line, especially in carpentry or metalwork, using a pointed tool also called a scribe.
