composing stick

Letterpress assembly tool

A composing stick is a handheld metal tray used in traditional letterpress printing to assemble individual pieces of type into lines.

The compositor picks letters from a type case and arranges them in the stick, which can be adjusted to different line widths.

Once a line is complete, it's transferred to a larger form called a galley.

He set the type letter by letter in his composing stick.
