cooper
Makes wooden vessels
A cooper is a craftsman who makes and repairs barrels, casks, and other wooden vessels bound with hoops.
The trade was essential before modern containers—coopers made everything from wine barrels to butter churns.
To cooper is to make or mend such containers.
The word survives mainly in surnames and historical contexts: The old cooperage still stands by the river. (Capitalized Cooper is a surname.)
