linotype

Hot metal composer

Linotype is a method of typesetting that casts entire lines of text as single metal slugs, rather than assembling individual letters.

The technology dominated newspaper and book printing from the 1880s through the 1970s, when phototypesetting and digital methods replaced it.

A linotype machine or its operator may also be called a linotype.

He spent forty years as a linotype operator at the Tribune. (Capitalized Linotype is the trademark.)
