telex

Pre-fax transmission

Telex was a communication system that transmitted typed messages between machines over telephone lines, dominant from the mid-20th century until fax and email displaced it.

A telex is also a message sent through this system: We received a telex from the London office.

As a verb, to telex is to send such a message.

The technology is now largely obsolete.
