telemetry

Distance data collection

Telemetry is the automatic collection and transmission of data from remote sources to receiving equipment for monitoring.

The term comes from Greek roots meaning "distant measurement." Sensors on spacecraft, race cars, or medical devices gather readings and beam them back: Mission control monitored the rocket's telemetry.

In software, telemetry refers to usage data applications send to developers: You can disable telemetry in the settings.
