teletypewriter

Electric typing transmitter

A teletypewriter is an electromechanical device that sends and receives typed messages over telegraph or telephone lines.

The operator types on a keyboard; the machine converts keystrokes to electrical signals, transmits them, and prints incoming messages on paper.

Teletypewriters dominated business communication from the 1920s through the 1970s before fax machines and computers displaced them.

Often shortened to teletype or TTY.
