paper tape

Perforated data medium

Paper tape is a strip of paper used to store data as patterns of punched holes, each row representing a character or instruction.

It served as an early computer input/output medium and was used with telegraphs and teletypes.

Now obsolete, replaced by magnetic and digital storage: The old mainframe still had boxes of paper tape in the closet.
