legacy

What outlives you

The narrower legal meaning of legacy is a bequest – money or property left to someone in a will.

This meaning spawns the more general use of an often-intangible thing that is passed from one generation to the next: By signing the legislation into law, the president is trying to cement his legacy.

Legacy is used to describe a college student whose admission to an elite university is due to the attendance of relatives in previous generations: He was a Princeton legacy.

Placed before another noun, legacy refers to systems, methods, or companies that have failed to modernize: The computer was running legacy software.
