teleprinter

Wired message machine

A teleprinter is an electromechanical device that sends and receives typed messages over telegraph or telephone lines.

The operator types on a keyboard, and the machine converts keystrokes into electrical signals; at the receiving end, another teleprinter prints the message automatically.

Teleprinters were standard equipment in newsrooms, businesses, and government offices through most of the twentieth century, largely replaced by fax machines and email.

Also called a teletypewriter or teletype.
