SMS
Mobile messaging protocol
SMS stands for Short Message Service, the technology behind text messaging on mobile phones.
The term dates from the early days of cellular communication when messages were limited to 160 characters.
Though newer messaging apps have largely supplanted it technically, SMS remains common shorthand for any text message: Did you get my SMS? (Lowercase sms is occasionally used as a verb.)
