floppy disk
Flexible magnetic media
A floppy disk is a portable data storage medium used with personal computers from the 1970s through the early 2000s.
The disk itself—a thin magnetic platter inside a protective sleeve—was flexible in early versions, hence "floppy." Later 3.5-inch disks had rigid plastic cases but kept the name.
Floppy disks held small amounts of data by modern standards and were largely replaced by CDs and USB drives.
The floppy disk icon persists as the universal "save" symbol in software.
