dial-up modem
Phone-line internet device
A dial-up modem is a device that connects a computer to the internet through a standard telephone line, converting digital signals to audio tones and back.
Dial-up was the dominant form of home internet access through the 1990s, characterized by slow speeds and the distinctive screech of the connection handshake.
The technology required exclusive use of the phone line: We couldn't make calls while someone was online.
Now largely obsolete, replaced by broadband connections.
