trunk line
Primary communication channel
A trunk line is a main line in a transportation or communication network, as distinguished from smaller branch or feeder lines that connect to it.
In railroads, the trunk line is the primary route between major terminals.
In telecommunications, it refers to a main channel connecting telephone exchanges or switching centers.
The old trunk line ran straight through the valley to the coast.
