store-and-forward

Receive, hold, send

Store-and-forward describes a method of data transmission where a message is sent to an intermediate station, held there temporarily, then transmitted onward to its destination.

Email works this way—messages pass through servers that receive, store, and relay them.

The technique contrasts with real-time transmission, trading immediacy for reliability: The satellite uses store-and-forward to handle communications when ground stations are out of range.
