exchange
Trade back and forth
Exchange is giving something and receiving something else in return.
The core image is reciprocal transfer: you exchange currency at the airport, exchange vows at a wedding, exchange words in conversation.
An exchange is both the act and what's traded: a heated exchange, an exchange of gunfire.
It also names institutions where trading happens: stock exchange, commodity exchange.
To exchange something is to swap it: I exchanged the shirt for a larger size.
