Morse code

Telegraph's dot-dash alphabet

A system of dots and dashes representing letters and numbers, named after Samuel Morse, who helped develop it for telegraph communication in the 1830s.

Each letter corresponds to a unique pattern of short signals (dots) and long signals (dashes): SOS is three dots, three dashes, three dots.

Originally transmitted by tapping a telegraph key, Morse code can be sent by sound, light, or any on-off signal: She blinked Morse code with a flashlight.

Though superseded by modern communication, it remains popular among amateur radio operators and is sometimes used as an accessibility method.
