fax

Scanned telephone transmission

A fax is a document transmitted electronically over telephone lines and printed at the receiving end, or the machine that sends and receives such documents.

The word is clipped from facsimile.

To fax is to send a document this way: I'll fax you the contract.

Once essential to business communication, fax machines have been largely displaced by email and scanning.
