sampan

Flat-bottomed Asian craft

A sampan is a small flat-bottomed boat used in East Asia, typically propelled by oars or a single sail.

Sampans serve as water taxis, fishing vessels, and sometimes permanent dwellings in harbors and rivers: Sampans crowded the harbor at Hong Kong.

The word comes from Chinese, meaning "three planks."
