matting

Coarse woven flooring

Matting refers to material used to make mats, or mats collectively—woven fibers of straw, rushes, or similar materials used as floor covering or for wrapping and protecting goods.

In picture framing, matting is the cardboard border placed between a picture and its frame, creating visual separation and preventing the image from touching the glass.

The word also describes the process of becoming matted: The dog's fur was prone to matting if not brushed regularly.
