dugout

Players await there

A dugout is a shelter or space created by digging into the ground or a hillside, or by hollowing out a log.

The term most commonly refers to two things: a canoe made from a hollowed tree trunk, and the covered bench area in baseball where players and coaches sit when not on the field.

The team watched nervously from the dugout as the final inning began.

Dugouts also historically served as primitive shelters or military positions dug into embankments.
