outrigger

Hull's lateral extension

An outrigger is a projecting frame or float attached to the side of a boat to prevent capsizing.

Canoes with outriggers are traditional in Pacific Island cultures.

The term extends to any stabilizing projection: outrigger scaffolding, or the brackets that hold fishing rods away from a boat's hull.

In aircraft, outriggers are supporting struts extending from the fuselage.
