clinker
Fused ash lump
A clinker is a mass ofite or slag fused together in a furnace—the stony residue left after coal burns hot.
The word extends to anything similarly fused or hardened.
In American slang, a clinker is a glaring mistake or failure, especially a wrong note in music: The pianist hit a clinker in the second movement.
A clinker can also be a dud or flop: His last film was a real clinker.
