umiak
Hide-covered Inuit boat
A umiak is a large open boat traditionally used by Inuit and other Arctic peoples, made of animal skins stretched over a wooden or bone frame.
Unlike the enclosed kayak, umiaks could carry many passengers and heavy cargo, used for whaling expeditions and transporting families and goods.
Also spelled oomiak or umiac.
