forestaysail

Triangular bow canvas

A forestaysail is a triangular sail set on the forestay—the cable running from the foremast to the bow of a sailing vessel.

It's one of several headsails that can be rigged forward of the mast, helping propel and balance the boat when sailing into the wind.

Also called a forestays'l or simply a staysail.
