footrope

Rope beneath yard

A footrope is a rope stretched beneath a ship's yard or bowsprit for sailors to stand on while working aloft: The crew edged along the footrope to furl the sail.

In fishing, a footrope is the weighted line along the bottom edge of a trawl net that keeps it close to the seabed.
