shrouds

Envelops in mystery

Shrouds are cloths used to wrap a dead body for burial.

By extension, anything that covers or conceals can be a shroud: a shroud of mist, shrouded in secrecy.

In sailing, shrouds are ropes or cables supporting a mast—a different word that settled on the same spelling.

To shroud is to cover or hide: Fog shrouded the harbor.
