seam

Where fabrics meet

A seam is the place where two pieces of something (especially fabric) join, like the shoulder seam on a shirt or a welded seam joining two pieces of metal.

A layer of mineral embedded in rock is also called a seam (coal seam).

Figuratively, a rich seam of something is a valuable store of it.

The phrase at the seams is used figuratively in bursting at the seams (over full) and falling apart at the seams (deteriorating quickly).
