waxed

Coated for shine

Waxed is the past tense of wax in its two distinct senses.

One meaning is to apply wax—a waxy coating, a waxed floor, waxed paper.

The other is the older verb meaning to grow or increase: The moon waxed full.

This second sense survives mainly in wax and wane and in phrases like wax poetic or wax nostalgic, meaning to become increasingly so: He waxed eloquent about his hometown.
