Annals are historical records arranged by year, chronicling events as they occurred: the annals of the Roman Republic.
More broadly, annals refers to the accumulated history of a subject or field: one of the greatest upsets in the annals of sports, a discovery that will go down in the annals of medicine.
The word appears almost exclusively in the plural.
