license

Authority to operate

License is a verb and, in American English, a noun.

In British English, the spelling licence is used for the noun.

When an authority licenses something, it gives permission for it to operate, be sold, or be used.

A license is typically used in a legal sense, and is almost always part of a compound term, as in marriage license, liquor license, and driver’s license.

More generally, license means freedom: The witness has taken considerable license in her version of the sequence of events.
