cover up

Suppress damaging truth

Cover up means to conceal something, especially wrongdoing or embarrassing information.

You might cover up a mistake, a scandal, or evidence of a crime: The administration tried to cover up the extent of the damage.

The noun cover-up names the concealment itself: The cover-up was worse than the crime.

More literally, to cover up is simply to put covering over something: Cover up the leftovers before refrigerating.
