backup

Copy for safety

Backup is a copy kept in case the original is lost or damaged: Make sure you have a backup of your files.

The word extends to anything held in reserve as a substitute: a backup plan, a backup generator, backup singers.

As a verb (usually two words: back up), it means to create such a copy or to provide support.

A backup can also be an accumulation causing delay: a backup on the freeway.
