accession
Taking the crown
Accession is the act of attaining a position of power or office: the king's accession to the throne, her accession as CEO.
The word implies formal assumption of rank rather than mere appointment.
In libraries and museums, accession means adding an item to a collection and recording it in a register; the verb means to catalog something this way.
Accession can also mean agreeing to a treaty or demand: The country's accession to NATO required years of negotiation.
